Scope for wind power in India

  • The electricity sector in India had an installed capacity of 227.356 GW as of August 2013.
  • India's shortfall in power supply may worsen over the next several years as increasing demand due to the country's fast economic growth.
  • Despite 55,000 megawatts of generation capacity being added between April 1, 2007 and March 31, 2012, power supply was still 9% less than demand in the FY 12-13.
  • India is projected to see an electricity supply shortfall of 6.7 % in the current fiscal as per the assessment of demand and supply of Power done by Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
  • Increased fuel costs & challenges over fuel availability have led to tariffs increasing.
  • Policies like Renewable Purchase obligations , GBI, increasing tariffs , open access have all led to increasing wind capacity.
  • The government has a target to increase power-generation capacity by 88,537 megawatts in the five-year period from Apr2012.
